Fair organizers hyping heritage

Clovis’ oldest surviving house will reside at the Curry County Fair as part of the new Pioneer Village.

Fairgrounds Manager Justus Anderson said the village will include antiques, demonstrations and people dressed as pioneers.

“To go with the Pioneer Village, we’re going to have all kinds of antiques in the indoor pavilion on display,” Anderson said.

Demonstrations will include horseshoeing, canning, spinning, wool dyeing, weaving, hand-quilting and hand-sewing. Other features include storytelling, a windmill and possibly a blacksmith.

“It’s phenomenal when people can see how your great-grandmother lived,” said Ginger Beck of Clovis, who helped organize the village. “It amazes these kiddos. They get excited when they see most of this stuff in jars, not cans.”

Glen Shot of Shot’s Tree Trimming trimmed the yard in front of the house. Shot also temporarily donated pieces from his antique collection, including a peddler’s wagon, an 1825 washing machine, an 1847 pump organ and a two-man bicycle.

A fireworks display Monday night is another addition to the fair’s schedule. Anderson said the best place to view the display is on the west side of the fairgrounds.

“We hope it will kick Monday off; Monday’s usually a little slow,” Anderson said.

Anderson said blacktop was added to replace dirt walkways because before, people would have to walk in mud after a heavy rain. The food court was also graveled and sealed.

Bathrooms were added near the food court so fairgoers would not have to walk across the fairgrounds. The bathrooms replaced a wood structure nearby and the wood was recycled to beautify the rodeo concession stands.
