July 18, 2007 Meetings Watch: Curry County Commission

Curry County commissioners on Tuesday approved the contract for roofing work at the Curry County Fairgrounds with Conklin Roofing Systems. But commissioners also questioned the roofing company’s previous service.

The contract will pay the roofing company about $16,000 to repair the roof over the Home Arts Building and about $12,000 to repair the roof over the indoor food court.

Commissioner Tim Ashley had concerns about the company’s ability to fulfill its obligation. Conklin had been contracted to work on the

county courthouse roof, but that contract had to be terminated because it failed to start the project on time, said County Attorney Stephen Doerr.

Doerr said the company had until Tuesday to start the fairgrounds project.

Ashley asked fairgrounds manager Justus Anderson if the company had started working on the fairgrounds roof Tuesday morning. Anderson said they had not.

“There’s a lot of questions in my mind if they’ll perform,” Ashley said. “What you’re telling me is confirming my concerns.”

Anderson said Tuesday night he made contact with Conklin Roofing Systems, and was told the company intended to begin work this morning.

Conklin representatives could not be reached by the CNJ for comment.

In other business, commissioners:

• Approved a comprehensive county plan that will serve as a guide for future county policies, said county Finance Director Mark Lansford.

• Accepted a bid to buy a half-ton truck for about $25,000 from Performance Buick, Pontiac and GMC in Farmington for the Sheriff’s Office. The new truck replaces a 2003 Ford F-150 the office uses to transport prisoners.The office will use money from a law enforcement grant to pay for the truck, Lansford said.

County Sheriff Matt Murray said the sheriff’s office will use the truck for prisoner transport.
