EULESS, Texas —Travis Reid of Clovis birdied three of the last four holes Monday to take a one-shot lead after the first round of a U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifier tournament.
The New Mexico State junior finished at 3-under-par 68 on the Texas Star Golf Course.
Two players are tied at 69.
The second and final round is today, with the top four finishers advancing to the national-level event July 9-14 in Wheaton, Ill.
Reid started his charge at No. 15 by hitting a wedge from 70 yards to within six inches for tap-in birdie. After a par of 16, Reid rolled in a downhill 7-footer for birdie on No. 17.
He finished the round by hitting driver-driver to reach the fringe on the 570-yard, par-5 18th, and after chipping on, holed a six-footer for his 68.
