Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
The starters gun on the 3A/5A boys and girls state track meet fires this morning at Albuquerque’s University Stadium and the Rams and Lady Rams are sending a large contingent.
The Portales boys have seven athletes participating, including: Junior Tyler Anderson (110 m hurdles), junior Joey Moore (200 m), senior Erett Grubbs (shotput, discus), junior Jacob Brady (discus), senior Hunter Rackler (high jump, javelin), and sophomore Devin Stinson (javelin). The Rams are also competing in the medley relay.
Leading the Lady Rams into the state track meet is junior Jordan Roehl. Roehl will be competing in the shotput and discus. Other Lady Rams competing this weekend include: Junior Carissa Swift (long jump), freshman Lizzie Armstrong (1600 m), freshman Jenna Wagner (triple jump) and junior Kandace Bergseiker (200 m, 400 m). The Lady Rams are also competing in all four relays (400 meter, 800 meter, 1600 meter and medley). The state track meet continues through Saturday.
Meanwhile, the 2007 New Mexico state individual tennis tournament begins this morning in Albuquerque.
Second-seeded Portales senior Ella Erf and fourth-seeded junior Bethany Self both have byes into the second round. Erf faces seventh-seeded Lauren Hess from Lovington in the second round, while Self plays fifth-seeded Chelsea Lehman from Sandia Prep. Both matches are set for 2 p.m. The Lady Ram’s sixth-seeded doubles duo of juniors Tessa Bryant and Kassandra Short are scheduled to face Ruidoso’s pair of Mirrissa Balderrama and Sammi Bennett at 11 a.m.
On the boys side, Portales senior Kyle Adams faces fifth-seeded Jake Orderica from Ruidoso at 9:30 a.m. before the sixth-seeded Ram tandem of Skyler and Walker Partin play Cobre’s duo of Charles Cook and Zach Salas at 12:30 p.m.
