CARLSBAD — Clovis High’s boys got individual wins from seven athletes on Friday and had just enough to nip Carlsbad 126 1/2-125 for the title in the five-school Carlsbad qualifier track meet.
The Wildcats scored in 15 of 19 events, getting wins from James Howard (long jump), Brandon Williams (triple jump), Jordan Mendoza (javelin), Michael Cohen (shot put), Kolt Merren (100), Brian Mead (110 hurdles) and David Segovia (300 hurdles). In addition, the 400 relay team of Mead, Merren, Scott McMath and Manuel Robles won in 43.62.
Meantime, the Clovis girls put together another solid showing, winning 11 events and scoring in everything except the 400, the 3,200 and the 300 hurdles in amassing 173 points to 93 for runnerup Hobbs.
The Lady Wildcats added new Class 5A state-qualifying performances from Brittni Jimenez, second in long jump at 16-8; Antiesha Brown, first in triple jump at 34-6, and Heather Malloy, first in the 200 in 25.91 seconds.
Also, the Lady Cats’ 800 relay team of Tara DeWitt, Malloy, Brown and Lauren McDaniel improved on what was already a state-best time, running 1:44.51 in Friday’s meet.
“It was light competition,” CHS girls coach Darrel Ray said. “We had a few events where we did a great job. Mostly, what I was proud of is our long jumpers and triple jumpers came through.
“I’m happy when we can get a performance like that from the 4x2. They had to do it strictly on time; they weren’t pushed.”
Brown led a 1-2-4 finish in long jump and a 1-3-4 showing in triple jump. The Lady Cats took at least three places in every field event except pole vault, where they finished 2-3.
