CHS TRACK: Lady Cats post victory at Hobbs

HOBBS — Clovis High’s girls scored in 15 of 19 events on Saturday to capture the team title in the Gene Wells Invitational.

The Lady Wildcats finished with 119 1/2 points to 97 1/2 for host Hobbs, while Carlsbad was a distant third with 66 points.

Clovis’ boys finished second with 83 points, trailing only Carlsbad (104).

The girls scored in 15 of 19 events, winning five of them. Tara DeWitt (200), Kacee Escobar (discus), Lainey Flatow (high jump) and Antiesha Brown (long jump) were individual winners, while the 800 relay team of DeWitt, Barbara Vidal, Brittni Jimienz and Lauren McDaniel won in the 800 relay in 1:48.31.

The 800 relay team of DeWitt, Janisha Pleasnat, Jimenez and Brown posted a state-qualifying time of 50.51 seconds in finishing second in the 400 relay.

The boys also took five wins while scoring in 12 events. Junior Manuel Robles posted state qualifying marks in leading a 1-3-4 finish in long jump at 23-3 and a 1-4-5 showing in triple jump at 46-9, while senior Michael Cohen led a 1-2-3 sweep in shot put at 47-0.

Other winners were junior Jordan Mendoza in javelin (155-10) and the 800 relay team of Brian Mead, Scott McMath, Robles and Kolt Merren (1:34.06).

Clovis teams return to action on Friday and Saturday in the Hereford Invitational.
