Kevin Breshears of Rheanie Farms in Portales captured first place in the A non-irrigated division of the 2006 National Corn Growers’ Association’s Corn Yield Contest in New Mexico, according to a Pioneer Hi-Bred International news release.
He won with a yield of 65.31 bushels per acre.
The annual competition honors the highest producing corn growers who compete in a range of corn production classes.
Breshears planted the winning entry June 27, 2006, and harvested the winning plot Nov. 22, 2006, according to the release.
He earned one of 333 state titles won by growers planting Pioneer hybrids.
Breshears was also an award winner in the 2005 competition.
Saturday job fair set in Lea County
More than 40 companies and government entities that hire in Lea County and the region are expected to participate in a job fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lea County Events Center in Hobbs, according to a news release from the organizers.
Paul Starr, vice president and general manager of Noalmark Broadcasting Corp. in Hobbs, said the company is holding the job fair because of the difficulty finding qualified workers to fill openings.
Among the employers planning to participate are the city of Hobbs, including the police and fire departments; Lea County, including the detention center; Coca-Cola; the Lea County Cheese Plant; educational employers, including New Mexico Junior College and Eastern New Mexico University at Roswell; oilfield companies including Halliburton and Schlumberger; the National Enrichment Facility, and the county’s staffing companies, the release reads.
