Winter weather leads to slippery roads

The recent snowfall impacted driving in Roosevelt County but no serious accidents were reported.

According to Portales Police dispatcher logs there were about 10 accidents in a 24-hour span.

“I assume that the accidents are weather-related since the number of accidents that we have had is a little unusual,” said Sgt. Brack Rains of the Portales Police Department.

Rains said he responded to three accidents himself Thursday morning, two of which were weather-related.

Wednesday there were about seven accidents reported and of those reports three said that they had lost control due to the icy road conditions.

One caller reported that a pickup had spun out and was on the side of the road on U.S. 70 but the caller was afraid to stop due to the ice. Two different cars reported sliding into signs because of the ice. There were no reports of injuries in any of the accidents.

“I do not think that tonight (Thursday night) will be as bad as it was last night, they will have to deal with patches of black ice, usually intersections are the problem,” said Rains.
