A Clovis man was sentenced to four years in prison for hiding his gun in a child’s toy box, according to a press release from the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s office.
Sammy Guerrero, 24, was arrested in September 2003 and charged as a suspect in connection with a string of local robberies. The robberies occurred at several Clovis businesses in the summer of 2003.
Arrested at a Clovis residence after his vehicle was tracked there, police found Guerrero’s gun hidden in the toy box of his girlfriend’s son after his arrest, the release said.
Thursday the court gave Guerrero the maximum sentence of three years in the Department of Corrections in addition to one year for aggravated circumstances for the danger the gun posed to the child, the release said.
The robbery charges were presented to a jury in June and resulted in a mistrial. Guerrero will stand trial a second time in November, according to the release.
During the June trial, the jury convicted Guerrero on the charge of child abuse.
