Mavis George, 83, of Portales died Monday, May 15, 2006, at her home.
She was born April 13, 1923, in Center Point, Texas, to Bessie and Kelley White. She graduated from Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, in 1941. She played in the band, marched in the drill team and played catcher on the softball team. She was also active in speech and won the state championship for recitation.
She worked in an aircraft factory in Corpus Christi during World War II, after which she moved to Portales, where her parents lived.
She married Harold George on March 30, 1946, in Portales.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine. She was employed at Odom Office Supply and later the Office Center for more than 20 years.
Family members said she enjoyed cooking and canning. They also said she loved to fish.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Frank Edwin, Francis, Freddy, Cecil and Gene White; two sisters, Lena Lewis and Bessie Jo Wollen; and a son, John Harold George, who died April 17, 1992.
She is survived by her husband of the home; a daughter, Becky Eminger (and husband, Gary) of Henderson, Nev.; a daughter-in-law, Cathy George-Clark; seven grandchildren, James Barber of Portland, Texas, Sharman Olzer and Lyndi Hagen, both of Henderson, Nev., Kerrie Burrus of Vernon, Texas, Bryan George of Minnesota, Kevin George of Canyon, Texas, and Kelly Little of Borger, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren, Brandon and Lawson Barber, Kyle and Kevin Cooper, Rebekah Caskey, D. J. and Rachel Olzer, Bradley and Joshua Hagen, Courtney and Emily McKinsey and Tyler Little; and a sister, Doris Powell of Bakersfield, Calif.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
The Rev. J.R. Ross will officiate assisted by Becky Eminger.
Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church in Portales.
