ALBUQUERQUE — Senior Kelli Johnson and junior Jordon Paul turned in second-place finishes Friday, helping Floyd’s girls score 15 points on the first day of the Class 1A state track meet at the University of New Mexico track facility.
Johnson ran a time of 12 minutes, 44.79 seconds in the 3,200 while Paul was clocked in 2:29.83 in the 800 for the Lady Broncos. Other points for Floyd came on a third-place finish by eighth-grader Madeline Love in the 3,200 (13:10.05) and a sixth by freshman Kelsi Gray in triple jump (30-11 1/2).
Floyd had a couple of bad breaks on the first day. Its 800 relay team was disqualified for an exchange outside the zone while Paul wasn’t able to make the finals in the 400 — she came in ranked second — due to a problem with her arch.
Floyd did qualify its other three relays for today’s finals. The 1,600 medley team of Jordan Terry, Rebecca Blue, Bree Lancaster and Johnson ran a time of 4:45.57; the 400 relay with Terry, sophomore Jessica Christensen, Paul and Blue was clocked in 54.39, and the 1,600 relay team of Terry, Christensen, Lancaster and Blue finished in 4:34.99.
Gray also made the finals in both the 100 and 200.
“We had a few ups and downs, but overall it went pretty well,” Floyd girls coach Adam Terry said.
For Floyd’s boys, eighth-grader Jesus Davalos did not make the finals in the 400, but did qualify with the second-best time of the day in the 100. Also, freshman Chay Chenault did not place in the top six in the 3,200.
The Broncos will have Davalos in the 100 finals at 3:35 p.m. today, while senior Brad Lee will run the 1,600 at 4:05 p.m.
