Lady Cats settle for split on road

ROSWELL — A doubleheader spilt Tuesday at Roswell High left Clovis softball coach Brandi Thomas wanting more.

“I’m not happy with the split,” she said. “We came away with some positives, but you’re never happy with a split.”

Clovis won the opener 6-3 in eight innings. Roswell rebounded in the second game, beating the listless Lady Wildcats 3-1 to end a six-game losing streak.

Freshman Tisa Forrest pitched both games for Clovis (7-4), finishing with eight strikeouts for the day.

Clovis Juniors Sonia Chavez and Jordan Garrett went 2-for-4 in Game one. Junior Maria Gallegos tripled and scored the Lady Cats’ only run in Game two.

Thomas said she was happy with how her team hit in the first tilt when they pounded out nine hits.

“We knew their pitchers liked to work the outside,” she said. “So we worked all week on hitting away.”

The Clovis coach said the break in-between games stopped her team’s momentum, and they came out flat in Game two.

“They brought in a different pitcher, but she wasn’t any better than the first one,” Thomas said. “We just couldn’t hit the ball.”

Thomas said defense is an area she wanted to see her team improve after the Lady Cats committed two errors in each game.
