Lady Rams take third in Dexter tournament

DEXTER — The Portales Lady Rams played well enough to win the Dexter Tournament, unfortunately, they ran into their nemesis — Jal.

Portales went 2-1 and took third place, its only loss coming in the semifinals against Jal. The Lady Rams are 6-5 for the season, three of those losses were against, you guessed it, Jal.

Portales coach Robbie Crowley said her team has played much better than the 6-5 record might suggest.

“Considering three were to Jal and two came in that season-opening tournament when we didn’t have all our players,” Crowley said. “I’m not disappointed, but (our record) could be better.”

In the tournament, Junior Sasha Parker pitched all three games, striking out 10 in a 6-4 win against Loving, six in a 3-1 loss to Jal, and 12 in a 9-2 win against Estancia.

Parker and Amanda Terry were named to the All-Tournament team. The slap-hitting Terry went 5-for-11 in the tournament.

“She had a good tournament fielding and hitting,” Crowley said about Terry.

Crowley said senior Rebekah Gonzales also was a force with the bat this weekend.

“She’s hitting the ball real well,” Crowley said. “Putting the ball in play.”

Gonzales went 4-for-7 in the tournament.

The Lady Rams meet Loving again on Tuesday, when they go on the road for a doubleheader.
