The United Way of Eastern New Mexico hopes to raise almost $43,000 more than in 2005.
United Way officials on Thursday announced their 2006 fund-raising goal is $525,000, an 8 percent increase over last year’s total of $482,005
The agency announced its hopes at The Landing at Cannon Air Force Base during its annual banquet. Officials set a Curry County goal of $455,000. Roosevelt County’s goal was set at $70,000.
“We reached our goal this year despite the tsunami, despite hurricanes, despite BRAC, and so I really think we can accomplish (a higher goal),” said Christine Caldwell, the agency’s assistant director.
“I think things are looking up with the base and, hopefully, with no more huge natural disasters, I really think we can reach our goal.”
New campaign chair Leo Lovett said he’s committed to meeting the goal.
“I pledge to leave no business untouched, no cow pattie unturned, no train car uninspected,” Lovett joked.
Also at Thursday’s banquet, United Way honored volunteers and its top givers from last year’s campaign.
Laurie Bentley was spotlighted as Campaign Volunteer of the Year. United Way officials said she logged more than 1,500 volunteer hours, many of them late at night and on weekends.
LCI 2 Inc., a Clovis construction company, was honored for pledging more than $10,000 to United Way of Eastern New Mexico during last year’s campaign, which benefits non-profit agencies in Curry and Roosevelt counties during 2006.
Lonnie and Barbara Allsup were recognized as the top individual givers during last year’s campaign.
Also recognized were Ray Sullivan, the agency’s 2005 president; Dianna Thompson, the 2005 campaign chair; Rusty Galloway and Derek Cockrell, for nine years of service on the board of directors; and Zala Smith for six years of service on the board.
