CARLSBAD — The Clovis Lady Wildcats are taking more pride in their defense and it shows.
The top-ranked Lady Wildcats held an opponent under 40 points for a sixth-straight game and move one win away from another District 4-5A title with a 65-19 win Friday over struggling Carlsbad.
Junior Tori Northcutt scored a season-high 15 points for the Lady Wildcats (23-2 overall, 3-0 in district) who host second-place Hobbs on Friday in the regular-season finale.
“We’ve really been getting our hands on a lot of balls and getting a lot of deflections and steals,” Clovis coach Miles Watters said of his team’s stifling defense. “We’re also doing a good job of helping off the ball.”
Clovis beat Carlsbad by 57 points in the team’s first meeting, which made Watters wonder a little how his team would play in Tuesday’s rematch.
“I was pleased we played as sharp as we did,” Clovis coach Miles Watters said. “In the five years that we’ve been going down there it’s always been a tough place to play.
“We’ve done a good job of coming out and playing our game and not playing down to the level of our opponent.”
Ebony Bunton and Vanessa O’Neal added eight points each for Clovis, which built a 41-10 halftime lead.
Jordan Neatherlin led Carlsbad (4-21, 0-4) with 10 points.
