AMARILLO — Three members of Clovis High’s Class 5A state runnerup football team have been chosen to the 2005 Class 5A-4A Golden Spread Team, announced recently by the Amarillo Globe News.
Junior running back Brian Mead and junior wide receiver Rishard Matthews were chosen on offense, while senior free safety Devin Sweet was selected to the defense.
The 5-foot-8, 170-pound Mead rushed for 1,960 yards and 21 touchdowns this season for the Wildcats, who went 12-2 and lost in the finals to Las Cruces Mayfield 17-7. Their only other loss was also to Mayfield 7-0 in the season opener.
Matthews caught 43 passes for for a school-record 839 yards and 12 touchdowns this year, while Sweet, also the Cats’ starting quarterback, was in on 53 tackles and had a team-leading five interceptions. At quarterback, Sweet threw for 1,034 yards for the season.
Twelve players were chosen on offense, including a placekicker, and 12 on defense, including a punter.
Plainview had the most selections with six, followed by Amarillo High with four and Clovis and Amarillo Palo Duro with three apiece.
Plainview, which reached the quarterfinals of the Texas Class 4A playoffs, had the player of the year in senior running back Jamar Wall and the coach of the year in Marty McClintock.
