Portales City Council approved two election related resolutions Tuesday night as they moved swiftly through their regular agenda.
Councilors gave unanimous approval to a resolution moving two polling places in time for municipal elections next spring.
City Clerk Joan Martinez-Terry said she had been approached by school officials from L.L. Brown Elementary about the change.
“The school asked me if we could change Ward C polling place at Brown because of all the commotion being created by construction.”
Martinez-Terry said she agreed that it wasn’t a good situation and sought another location. School officials offered to host the site at James Elementary, a location which Martinez-Terry liked.
The other change was Ward D, which had been moved last year to Calvary Baptist Church. Neither the city or the church was happy with that situation for various reasons, according to Martinez-Terry.
Martinez-Terry proposed that Ward D’s polling place be moved to the Portales Recreation Center.
The other election related resolution set the election schedule for 2006. The municipal election would be held March 7 according to the resolution which passed unanimously.
In other business the council:
• Adopted a resolution pertaining to a professional service agreement for the Economic Development Department that provides for accepting $1,500 in grant money to buy materials for displaying community marketing information at trade-shows and fairs.
• Adopted a resolution allowing the state to take back $200,000 in public works funding that had previously been granted. The state has indicated they will return the funds in the regular budget.
• Granted an easement agreement for Sharon Cavett for her property at 120 E. Fir to take care of an encroachment by the house and a fence on the property.
• Heard a report on possible studies being conducted on public transit and the possibility of expanding services from City Manager Debi Lee and city attorney Steve Doerr.
