Crash leaves woman, new born son dead

The woman who died in Tuesday's crash on South Prince Street was pregnant, officials said.

Guadalupe Esquibel, 27, of Clovis, and her unborn son perished in the crash that involved a 1993 Pontiac and semi-tractor trailer.

Three passengers remained in a Lubbock hospital on Wednesday night; one was treated and released from the hospital in Clovis.

Esquibel was one of five occupants in the car that collided with the truck traveling south on U.S. 70, according to a Clovis Police Department press release.

Traffic Officer David Lester said the Pontiac entered the four-lane highway without stopping.

“There was a large tree growing in front of the stop sign,” Lester said. “The branches were going in front of the stop sign.”

However, Lester said all but one of the passengers in the car lived in the immediate vicinity of the intersection.

“I would assume they had traveled that road (before),” Lester said. “It’s pretty obvious you’re coming up to a major intersection. I can’t speak on their behalf, but it’s reasonable to assume they knew there was a stop sign.”

According to a CPD release, three of the vehicle’s five occupants are being treated at Lubbock’s Covenant Medical Center. Police refused to release the names of the other victims in the accident. The press release lists an unnamed 4-year-old and 6-year-old in serious condition, and a 17-year-old male in good condition. Another 17-year-old male passenger was treated and released from the Plains Regional Medical Center, the release said.

Lester said he expected the 4-year-old and the 6-year-old would be upgraded to good condition Wednesday night.

The driver of the truck was not injured, Lester said, and went to the hospital on a voluntary basis to undergo a blood test.

“Generally, it’s going to be (administered) on a voluntary basis unless I have more (evidence) to go on to press the issue,” Lester said.

Sgt. Jim Schoeffel, public information officer, refused to comment on details of the investigation Wednesday, and did not release the name of the Pontiac's driver.

Members of the Esquibel family did not wish to comment.
