Floyd senior aims for future in law

Floyd High School graduate Richardo Navarrete will be looking at the high plains from his rear-view mirror after he gets his high school diploma.

“I will be going off to school at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces to major in pre-law,” says Navarrete, who will be of 17 graduating Saturday afternoon from Floyd High School.

Baccalaureate is at 1 p.m. and commencement begins at 1:45 p.m. at the school.

Navarette, a Floyd native who also holds a 4.0 grade point average, says that he will miss his friends and teachers. What he’ll remember most, though, is a piece of advice that he received.

“I had a teacher tell one of my classes that after high school is real life,” says Navarrete.

During high school Navarette played football, baseball and basketball. When “real life” begins at NMSU, he will just focus on his studies.

“I have my teachers and my mother to thank for help getting me back on track after I went through a bumpy road after my parents divorced,” says Navarrete. “I stopped playing sports my sophomore because of my grades slipping.”

When Navarrete walks the line at commencement, he will use the inspiration from his mother to help him succeed later in life.

“My mother started from nothing and she lives by herself now and is successful.”

Navarrete’s mother, Maria Navarette, said that she stressed to him when he was younger a strong work ethic.

“I always told him if he wanted to be someone that he would have to work real hard and study hard while in school,” she said. “From the age of five he has said that he wanted to go to school to be a lawyer.”
