Wheat demonstration being held Friday
Farmers in eastern New Mexico and West Texas can learn about wheat production and variety selection at the 2005 Wheat Field Day from 1:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday at the Agricultural Science Center.
Officials will present topics on wheat variety trial results, an update on the current status of wheat insect and disease occurrences in the area, white wheat production and marketing

Bingaman presses for rancher recognition
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman is pushing to have July 23, 2005, and July 22, 2006, as days to recognize the “American Cowboy.” The resolution encourages communities across the country to observe these days as National Days of the American Cowboy, and mark the days with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
Approximately 800,000 ranchers are in business across the country. New Mexico ranchers generated $758 million in sales in 2003, the most recent year for which numbers are available. In terms of agriculture production, only the dairies are a larger industry in New Mexico than ranching.
Quay County farmers eligible for disaster aid
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman announced earlier this month that Quay County has been declared eligible for federal disaster assistance as a result of severe rains that swept through the area in November 2004. Low interest emergency loans are available for qualified applicants from the Farm Service Agency, which is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
