Clovis Christian pair atop tourney

Clovis Christian golfers Mollie Peterson and Lauren Douma took the top two spots at the inaugural Clovis Christian Invitational golf tournament Monday at Clovis Municipal Golf Course.

Peterson recorded an 87 and Douma a 93 to earn qualifying legs for the 1A-3A girls state tournament in May. The state-qualifying score for girls at the par-71 course is 93.

The Eagles did not have enough players to field a team.

Peterson, a junior, notched her fourth qualifying leg of the season. A golfer needs three to qualify for state.

“It takes the pressure off of me, but I still have to keep (my playing level) up for district,” Peterson said.

Peterson had seven qualifying legs last year, but was not eligible for post-season play because Clovis Christian was not accredited by the New Mexico Activities Association.

Lovington’s Kevin Cartwright won the boys tournament with a 79. Dexter won the team title with a 347.

Clovis Christian’s Corey Hastings had a team-low 82 as the Eagles finished third among varsity teams with a 365.

Led by Tyler Fontenot’s 82, Clovis won the boys junior varsity tournament with a 355.

Farwell had the only full girls varsity squad. The Lady Blue finished with a 430, led by Dellani Jones’ 102.

The Clovis JV team had a 455. Natasha Collins led Clovis with a 103.
