Reporter's notebook: Resident takes active role in honoring police

Clovis resident Ray Jackson knows the value of emergency services.

On four occasions the 68-year-old has been transported to Lubbock for heart problems.

That’s why he has taken an active role as vice president of the area Fraternal Order of Eagles in recognizing firefighters and police officers.

“I know exactly what they are good for,” he said of emergency responders. “If it hadn’t been for them I wouldn’t be here.”

The annual Fireman and Law Enforcement Banquet and Dance is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Order’s lodge at 611 Industrial Park Dr. The group will award plaques for outstanding service to area law enforcement and firemen at the event, he said.

The Order solicited nominations from area law and fire agencies for men and women who went above and beyond their duty.

“The winners of it will each get a nice plaque engraved with their name, the award and the year,” he said.

Certificates of appreciation will be presented to those nominated but not selected for the top award.

The Melrose Future Farmers of America will be serving the event, which is free to police officers and firemen from the various agencies. About 160 will attend, Jackson said.

EMTs will be added next year to those recognized for outstanding service.
