Dorothy Collins, 84

Services: 3 p.m. today at Portales Cemetery.

Mrs. Dorothy Collins, 84, of Portales died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Heartland Continuing Care Center.

She was born Oct. 5, 1920, to Nora and Earnest Haragan in rural Oklahoma near Fox. The Haragan family moved to Floyd in 1926. They lived on a neighboring farm with the Collins family. As a teenager, she became acquainted with Lewis Collins and they were married Aug. 7, 1937. They lived in Truth or Consequences for several years, but always considered Portales home. While in T or C, they built rock houses and drove trucks.

Family members said she was an excellent carpenter and cook and enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband. They also liked to can and quilt. Family also said she will be remembered for her homemade pumpkin pies and she and her husband were devoted not only to each other but also to their children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Thelma Gossett, and by her husband, who died Feb. 10, 1979.

She is survived by a son, Danny Collins; a daughter, Lori Collins, two grandchildren, Rebecca and Erica; a great-grandchild, Danielle; two brothers, Willard Haragan of Roswell and Floyd (Jiggs) Haragan of Portales; and a sister, Lou Blevins of Roswell

Steve Collins will officiate the services.

Honorary pallbearers are all of her nieces and nephews

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Jesse Hawkins, 79

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at the Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis.

Mr. Jesse Hawkins, 79, of Clovis died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Plains Regional Medical Center

He was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Crosbyton, Texas, to Jesse and Ruth Hawkins. He had been a resident of Clovis since 1967. He married his wife Ardath in 1968 in Roswell. He worked for Johnson Lumber Co. until his retirement in 1997. He also owned Hawkins kindergarten with his wife. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1997; and three step-brothers, Raymond, Ben and David Hawkins .

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Girard of Sun City, Calif.; three sisters, Lois Burmeister and Nellie Bonner, both of Clovis, and Tina Faye Jolly of Amarillo; five nephews, Jimmy, Tommy and Eddie Bonner, David Jolly and Don Thompson; and two nieces, Terri Lynn and Toni Jolly

The Rev. Mike Eberhardt will officiate services.

Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Pallbearers are Ralph Phillips, Bill Chapman, Stacy Rush, Leon Kelley, Clarence Thompson, Travis Denton and Carroll Hendricks.

Honorary pallbearers are deacons of Central Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Children’s Home in Portales.

Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
