SAN ANGELO, Texas — Sophomore guard Ashley King recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds Saturday to lift Angelo State, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II, to a 61-42 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in a Lone Star Conference South Division women’s game.
King shot 9-for-11 from the field as the Rambelles (20-2, 8-1 South) overcame a five-point deficit by holding the Zias (9-14, 3-7) to just one field goal over the final seven minutes of the half.
Center Natalja Tsurbakova added 14 points for ASU, which shot 57 percent from the field in the second half to pull away.
Senior forward Loren Scarlett hit 4-of-5 field goals, including a pair of 3-point attempts, and led the Zias with 11 points.
Scarlett was also credited with five rebounds and a team-high four steals while playing 20 minutes.
ENMU didn’t trail by more than two points until less than four minutes remained in the half. The Zias went on a 9-2 run to open a 15-10 lead with seven minutes to go in the half, but from there they managed only Erika Cook’s bucket in the final minute and trailed the Rambelles 24-17 at the half.
King hit 7-of-8 shots en route to 16 points in the second half. The Rambelles held ENMU to just eight points in the first 11 minutes of the period and built their lead to 50-25 on a jump shot by Tsurbakova with 9:11 remaining in the game.
