Angelo State notches win over Hounds

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Senior guard Kenny Smith made eight 3-point baskets, breaking the school’s career record, and scored 29 points Saturday night to lead Angelo State’s men to a 94-81 Lone Star Conference South Division victory over Eastern New Mexico University.

ASU (11-13, 4-5 South), which made 12 3-pointers in an 80-76 win at Greyhound Arena last week, went 11-for-24 from long range this time. Smith was 8-for-13 from beyond the arc, giving him 14-for-22 in the two games against the Greyhounds (9-14, 2-6).

Smith now has 139 3-pointers in his career at ASU career, two more than the previous record-holder, Cedric Mason.

Jordan Walker added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams, shooting 7-for-10 from the field, while Rashawn Childs scored 16 points and Dustin Patton 11. ASU was 23-of-50 from 3-point range in the two games against ENMU.

The Hounds, lost four starters to fouls, got 21 points from Jamaal Hunnicutt and Jolen Montoya, 13 from Irshaun Pinckney and 11 from Reggie Wallace. Hunnicutt also posted a double-double, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.

Patton, who went 5-for-7 from 3-point range in last week’s game, got his only trifecta of the night with five seconds gone to give ASU a lead it would never relinquish.

With the score 11-8, Smith converted a trio of three 3-pointers in a 13-0 Angelo run that gave the Rams a 16-point cushion with just over nine minutes gone.

ASU led 47-30 at halftime, and opened its biggest margin (68-46) with just over 13 minutes left in the game. ENMU got as close as nine three times in the final three minutes.

The Rams shot 49 percent on Saturday, offsetting Eastern’s 48-38 domination of the glass.
