LOVINGTON — Just 11 days after overwhelming Lovington by 44 points, the Portales Lady Rams found they could have used some of those surplus points in the rematch.
Senior post Monique Perez and junior post Jenna Domzalski scored 19 points apiece as the Lady Wildcats turned the tables Tuesday night with a 57-46 District 4-3A triumph.
The win boosted Lovington (8-12, 2-1 district) into a tie for the 4-3A lead with Portales (10-10, 2-1).
On Jan. 28, the Lady Rams rolled to a surprisingly easy 70-26 win at the PHS gym, pulling away from a 12-10 lead late in the opening quarter to a 37-point margin in the first minute of the final stanza.
In that game, Domzalski managed only four points and Perez just a free throw. Portales, meantime, shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and converted 15-of-20 free throws.
Tuesday night, though, it was another story. Portales shot a frigid 35 percent from the field and was able to knock down just 10-of-23 charity tosses.
Lovington pulled away by outscoring Portales 17-8 in the third quarter, opening a 14-point lead.
“The girls were the difference,” Lovington girls coach Pilar Carrasco said. “I don’t mind if Portales beats us. I just don’t want to beat ourselves.
“Whenever a team is better than you, I can respect that. Tonight, we put a competitive team on the floor.”
