Police warn of magazine sellers

Six people were arrested on charges of soliciting without a permit on Tuesday and appeared at the Roosevelt County Courthouse on Wednesday, according to Portales Police Department Capt. Lonnie Berry.

Danielle Baker, 18; Gene Marion, 19; Bryan Fallin, 20; Sergio Silguero, 19; Douglas Gregg, 25 and Fernando Pomales, 21 were charged with soliciting without permit and each of were released on $1,000 appearance bonds. Berry said no date has been set for a hearing.

At approximately 4:01 p.m. on Tuesday, Portales police officers were advised a subject was claiming to be selling magazines, according to the police report. One of the officers said he observed a person stopping traffic to solicit magazine sales and to specifically ask where the elderly people lived.

Berry said the incidents took place at 801 Housing and Eastern New Mexico University West Campus.

Berry said the subjects were selling magazines without a business license for Atlantic Circulation Inc. Berry said the subjects were from out of town and are currently staying in Clovis.

All six are being represented by Randall Harris of Clovis. Harris did not return a call made to his office on Wednesday.

Berry is encouraging those who might have purchased a magazine subscription within the last week from someone who is going door-to-door to call the Portales Police Department.

“If someone goes to your home trying to sell you something, don’t allow them into your home without knowing who they are,” Berry said. “Any business should have a business license. The first thing you should do is ask for a business license.”
