Texico wins Farwell boys title

FARWELL — Braden Vaughan scored 23 points as Texico downed border rival Farwell 59-54 in the championship game of the 2004 Farwell Invitational boys basketball tournament.

Logan Brown added 11 points for the Wolverines and Tony Clement finished with 10.

Tate Nichols led Farwell with 17 points while Rowdy Mitchell and Chris Culver chipped in 10 each.

Melrose beat Whiteface 51-47 in the third-place game as Carlos Ruiz scored 25 points.

Texico edged Melrose 62-59 Friday to reach the title game.

Clement led Texico with 16 points.

Caleb Dodd scored 18 for Melrose and Ruiz added 14.

In the girls title game, sophomore Shayli Reed led a balanced attack as Friona breezed past Texico 55-22.

Trisha Winebrinner added 13 for the Class 2A Squaws and Katy Welch finished with 12.

Stephanie Bailey scored five points to lead Texico, which lost for the first time this season.

In the fifth-place game, Nicole Castaneda poured in a tournament-high 29 points to lead Whiteface to a 61-57 win over Grady.

Brittany Bailey led Grady with 15 points and Aerial Verble added 13.
