Bellum, Schiely earn All-LSC South honors

Senior outside hitter Anna Bellum and junior middle blocker Lindsay Schiely were first-team selections to the All-Lone Star Conference South Division volleyball squad, released Monday by the league office in Richardson, Texas.

They were among six Zias honored in voting done by division coaches. Senior setter Margie Goble was named to the second team, with sophomore middle blocker Grace George, senior middle blocker Emilie Rodman and senior libero Jessica Weeks earning honorable mention.

The Zias (24-8) are headed to Division II regional play for the first time since the school joined the NCAA in 1984. Seeded fifth, they take on fourth-seeded Mesa State in a 4 p.m. (MST) quarterfinal match on Friday at Kearney, Neb.

Bellum has earned first-team honors in both of her years at Eastern. She leads the team in kills (436), ranking seventh in the LSC in kills per game (3.60), and is third in digs (390).

Schiely transferred in from a junior college this year and made an immediate impact, ranking second on the team in kills (367) and third in blocks (100).

Goble, a fifth-year senior, came off an injury redshirt last year to collect 1,082 assists in 2004, and holds the school career record in assists (5,260).

George leads the conference in blocks (146) and is one of just two LSC players to average more than one block per game (1.36). Rodman, who ranks third on the team in kills and second in blocks, earned honorable mention honors for the second year in a row.

Weeks has been a key to ENMU’s defense this season, and her 500 digs are the seventh-most in school history. Her 816 digs in two seasons at Eastern ranks 10th in school history.

Also, Bellum and Weeks have been chosen the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District VI volleyball team, chosen by sports information directors in the district which also includes Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma. Bellum was named to the first team and Weeks to the second team.

Bellum has a 3.9 GPA with a major in Spanish, while Weeks has a 3.86 GPA with a double major in economics and finance. Both transferred to ENMU last year from Garden City (Kan.) Community College.

Athletes are judged on and off-court performance and must have at least a 3.2 GPA to be considered, Eastern SID Robert McKinney said. Only eight schools placed athletes on the team, and ENMU was one of four schools with multiple selections.
