Lady Cats still winless

“0h and five,” Clovis volleyball coach Darrell Ray sighed with a groan.

He had just watched Roswell sweep the Lady Wildcats 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 Thursday night at Rock Staubus Gym, pushing his team’s losing streak to five games to start the season. Ray had expected his team to struggle early after last year’s senior-laden team made the state playoffs, but expected a win by now.

“If we had a gun, we’d probably shoot every single toe off,” he said of his team’s inconsistent play. “We didn’t play well, we didn’t play smart.”

The Lady Wildcats were plagued by unforced errors the entire night, either serves into the net, misplaced sets or returns that went out of bounds.

Some of those led to point streaks for Roswell, now 2-0 on the season.

The Lady Cats were down 8-6 in the first game before the Coyotes had runs of 7-0 and 8-2 to win big. With Clovis up 15-14 in the second, Roswell scored the next five points for the 19-15 lead. Clovis never pulled closer than two points for the rest of the game. Ray said the only time his team showed real cohesion on the floor was in the second game.

In the deciding game, a four-point run built a 7-4 lead for Roswell before the Lady Coyotes ended the match by notching 15 of the last 19 points.

Ray said inexperience is partly to blame for those streaks.

“We honestly don’t know if we have a stressful situation who we’re going to go to,” he said.

Roswell had plenty of mistakes on their side as well, including a throng of serving errors.

“Fortunately, when we were down, Clovis didn’t take advantage,” Roswell coach Brian Masse said. The win for the Lady Coyotes ended a streak of five or six straight wins for Clovis in the series.

Masse said the most important thing for Clovis is keeping some confidence, because the talent is there.
