PHS, Floyd volleyball teams fall

ROSWELL — Roswell High opened its 2004 volleyball season Tuesday night with a 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18 victory over the Portales Lady Rams.

Stephanie gomez had nine kills, Sugar Tarin seven and Samantha Matta six for the Lady Coyotes. Meantime, Elizabeth Bennett chipped in five kills and three blocks and Lena Lucero pounded out four service aces.

For Portales, Morgan Hill collected a match-high 10 kills and Megan Kabrick added six.

“Early on we had trouble at the net,” PHS coach Ruth Chavez said. “We couldn’t get our offense going, and we couldn’t get our big middle hitters to hit.”

Chavez said in Game 4 the Lady Rams (1-3) struggled with their passing.

“We’re still young,” she said. “It’s going to take time. We have a lot of inexperience — some of these girls have never even played junior varsity ball before.”

Portales opened its season over the weekend in the Clovis Invitational, going 1-2 in the consolation bracket and finishing 14th in a 16-team field.

PHS defeated Roswell in the junior varsity preliminary. The score was not available.

Thursday night, the Lady Rams open their home schedule against Artesia. The varsity matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.

In junior high competition, Grady rallied for a 17-25, 25-22, 15-11 victory over Floyd.
