Aug. 29 Portales Junior High News
Great Beginnings
Principal Steve Harris reports that the junior high has gotten off to a great start this year. Along with welcoming new students and the seventh grade class, he welcomes Mark Poynor, reading teacher; Eva Deen Stephens, family and consumer science teacher, Amy Dornblaser, cheerleading coach; Vicki Gonzales, special student services teacher, Ginger Golden, language arts and coach; and Glenda Meeks, assistant principal.
Attendance Important
Students can learn lessons when they are in class, and they lose those opportunities when they are absent. Steve Harris reminds parents and students to make school a priority so students have the most options available for them. School officials are required to report excessive absences to Children, Youth, and Families, and if students have five unexcused absences, the principal schedules a conference with the student and parent to work on an improvement plan together.
Patriotic Assembly
Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. finds students in a dual purpose assembly. Students, faculty, and GEAR-UP personnel are working on the patriotic program. Student council officer hopefuls under Amanda Burnett’s direction will also present their campaign speeches to kick off their election.
Sports Schedule
All four volleyball teams open the season next Thursday when they host the Yucca teams. On Saturday both “A” teams travel to Tucumcari to face the Rattlers.
Football season opens Saturday at 11 a.m. when Ruidoso comes to challenge the Rams on their home field.
