Fun-Putt reopens for business
After acquiring it from Play Inc., new owner Paul LeClear has reopened the Fun-Putt Fun-Time Miniature Golf course at 1520 Thornton. LeClear estimates that it’s been “three or four years” since anybody had played a round at the site — until, that is, LeClear officially opened for business two weeks ago.
The Fun-Putt owner also isn’t sure how long ago the course was built, but figures it’s been quite awhile.
“I played there when I was a kid,” LeClear says. “And I’m almost 50 years old.”
Clovis now has two miniature golf courses in the area, with the other at Casel-Land Fun Center just west of the city.
The familiar layout of the Fun-Putt course hasn’t been altered by the new proprietor and many of the old perks are still in place. Holes-in-one at selected holes can earn players free food and beverages at local restaurants such as Foxy Drive-In, McDonald’s and Wienerschnitzel.
“I tried not to change too much, but I did replace all the green carpet, repainted everything and put in a lot of new boards,” LeClear says. “It took about two months.”
LeClear says that he plans on keeping Fun-Putt Fun-Time open year-round, with the exception of bad weather days.
Hours for Fun-Time Fun-Putt are from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., except for Fridays and Saturdays when LeClear plans on keeping it open until midnight.
GameStop brings games to Clovis
GameStop opened its first New Mexico location outside of Albuquerque last Thursday when the Clovis site went into business at 3900-A N. Prince.
The store specializes in game software, equipment and the play systems themselves for X-Box, Play Station and Game Cube as well as offering personal computer games and DVDs.
Based out of Grapevine, Texas, the chain has approximately 1650 stores, including several in Albuquerque.
Local GameStop manager Denise Keagle says that the organization is also planning on opening a store in Los Lunas next week and in Las Cruces the this week.
The Prince Street location for GameStop is part of a four-pad site that lines one of the entrances to Wal-Mart. Payless Shoes also recently opened for business at the same site.
Chili’s breaks ground in Clovis
Ground was moved for the planned Chili’s Restaurant in Clovis last week at 3805 N. Prince. Workers dug into the site for the first time last Tuesday in preparation for setting up the plumbing at the location.
After that, according to general contractor Bill Davis, the electricity will be worked on followed by the pouring of concrete slabs for the restaurant’s foundation.
Davis says that the chain is hoping to open its Clovis location, which is just south of Dollar Tree and just north of Lowe’s, by the end of August.
Clovis doctor elected to N.M. medical board
Dr. Stephen Haynes of Clovis was recently elected to the board of directors for the New Mexico Medical Review Association. Haynes was among three new electees — all selected for three-year terms.
The organization’s purpose is “to work with physicians, hospitals and other health care providers and Medicare beneficiaries throughout the state to improve the quality of health care,” according to a recent press release.
Haynes joins another Clovis physician, Dr. Albert Kwan, on the 13-person NMMRA board.
