Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Clovis resident Rob Ward finished second out of nine competitors in the novice lightweight division of the Texas Shredder Classic bodybuilding championship on May 1 in Austin, Texas.
The novice lightweight division is for contestants at 156 pounds and below. The 25-year-old Ward, a certified personal trainer at Bodies in Motion in Clovis, said he had to diet and train for a six-week period to bring his weight down from 169 pounds.
Points are based on three categories — a muscularity round, a symmetry round and an individual posing routine.
“I was pretty humble going in,” Ward said. “I didn’t know where I’d place. I never thought about (the possibility of being) first or second.”
A native of the San Francisco area, Ward’s fiance is from Clovis and he has lived in the area for about 3 1/2 years.
Ward said he got into weight training as a means of staying in shape, but got into competitive bodybuilding after he was encouraged by peers and has now competed three times over a period of about two years.
“I had a few guys telling me I had the physique to take it to that level,” Ward said.
He said he plans to enter another show in Texas sometime over the winter months.
