ENMU teams sixth in LSC track

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Ricardo Hernandez and Zach Gerleve highlighted Eastern New Mexico University performances over the weekend in the two-day Lone Star Conference track meet.

ENMU finished last in both divisions of the six-team meet, scoring 28 points on the men’s side and 11 in women’s competition. Angelo State ended Abilene Christian’s 20-year reign as women’s champions, edging the Wildcats for the team title 222-221.

Host Texas A&M-Kingsville followed with 99 points, while Tarleton State (74), Texas A&M-Commerce (53) and ENMU rounded out the scoring.

ACU took men’s team honors with 178 points, followed by ASU (130), Kingsville (120), Tarleton (96), Commerce (94) and ENMU.

Hernandez, a redshirt freshman, accounted for half of the Greyhounds’ points in men’s competition, finishing second in the 5,000-meter run in 15 minutes, 38.89 seconds and placing third in the 10,000 in 33:31.51. Gerleve fell less than a foot short in javelin competition as he placed second to ASU’s Adam Phillips at 178-9 1/2 — about 15 feet shy of his season best.

Other scoring for the men came on fifth-place finishes by Tyrone Sharpe in triple jump (45-5) and the 1,600 relay team (3:46.22), and sixths by Cody Grady in triple jump (43-5 3/4) and the 400 relay (44.40).

Junior Karissa Huskey led ENMU women’s performances, placing fifth in the 3,000 meters (11:57.26) and the 10,000 (43:43.91). Also Charlotte Sanchez was fifth in javelin at 109-3 3/4.

Sixth-place finishes were posted by Laura Rivera in the 3,000 (12:13.59), Jayme Williams in discus (113-4), Rachel Loya in javelin (105-10 1/4) and the 400 and 800 relay teams in respective times of 53.66 and 4:22.22.
