National health week aims for awareness

Roosevelt County public health experts are trying to get the word out on health awareness during National Health Week.
Mayor Orlando Ortega has proclaimed that the county recognizes this week as National Health Week. The proclamation defines the week as providing the opportunity for public and public health professionals to acknowledge successes in the ongoing effort of the elimination of health disparities in the community by the provisions of vital services. Some of the vital services are: Immunizations, health and family planning, cancer screening and disease preventions.
“One of the goals is to decrease disparity in getting treatment,” Carol Morgan, nurse manager for the New Mexico State Government Public Health Division, said. “There are some people who do not qualify for Medicaid. We work with federally funded clinics for those who can’t qualify.”
Morgan said another goal of National Health Week is to provide awarness to Roosevelt County residents.
Morgan said the New Mexico State Government Public Health Division works in conjunction with La Casa De Buena Salud, which is a federally-funded health-care provider.
“We have integrated services with La Casa (De Buena Salud),” Morgan said. “We help in the diagnosis of those who have sexually transmitted diseases and help those who can’t afford birth control. We help with those who have HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), immunization and provide techna shots.”
Morgan said the NMSGPH is located in the same building as La Casa De Buena Salud. She said the NMSGPH officials conduct the screening and patients can walk to the La Casa De Buena Salud part of the building for treatment.
James D’Agostino, Roosevelt General Hospital administrator, said the role of the Roosevelt General Hospital is to provide health care to the community.
“We have a commitment to provide primary care service for city and county residents,” D’Agostino said. “We set short-term and long-term goals. We have met our short-term goals and continue to grow.”
D’Agostino said RGH plans on adding two new doctors to the staff and anticipate an expansion within the next three years to the hospital. He said it will help continue to provide state-of-the-art technology to RGH patients.
“In the last year, we have brought our visiting physicians for speciality services such as eye surgeries, orthopedics and rheumatology , which is for those who suffer with arthritis,” D’Agostino said.
D’Agostino said they (RGH officials) will have a health fair during the year, but a date has not been set.
