Qwest introduces DSL to Tucumcari

High-speed Internet service, known as Qwest DSL, is now available in Tucumcari as a result of Qwest Communications International’s upgrading the local telecommunications network, according to a company news release.

In 2004 the company plans to invest an additional $200 million to expand DSL across its region.

With Qwest DSL, customers can surf the Internet at speeds ranging from approximately 256 kilobits per second to 1.5 megabits per second, which — at the highest DSL speed — is approximately 26 times faster than a traditional 56Kb dial-up connection.

ENMR/Plateau to elect directors

Members of ENMR/Plateau will vote on directors to serve on the board, during the annual membership meeting at 8 a.m. April 17 at the Grady High School gymnasium, according to a news release.

Directors up for election include:

n Position 7: Clayton, Nara Visa and Roy exchanges, for remainder of term. Candidates are John “Matthew” Baca of Roy; Tony Martinez II of Gladstone; Patsy Perschbacher of Amistad; and Richard Shaw of Mills.

n Position 9: Anton Chico, Conchas Dam, El Valle, Mosquero, Santa Rosa, Trementina, and White Lakes exchanges. Candidates are incumbent Gilbert Ortiz of Villanueva, and Ismael “Milo” Aragon and John Romero, both of Ribera.

n Position 10: Anton Chico, Conchas Dam, El Valle, Mosquero, Santa Rosa, Trementina, and White Lakes exchanges. Candidates are incumbent Paul Costa of Solano and Mabel Flores of Santa Rosa.

Incumbents Shirley Carter of Clayton, Position 8, and Shafie Hindi of Duran, Position 12, are unopposed.

Merritt honored at conference

Dr. Kennedy W. Merritt of Clovis was recognized last month at the Midwest Dental Conference as Alumnus of the Year, UMKC Dental Alumni Association, according to a conference publication.

The honor recognizes alumni of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry for lifelong commitment and contributions to the school, the association and the profession.

A native of New Mexico, Merritt has maintained a private practice in general dentistry in Clovis since graduating from the school of dentistry in 1978.

Also involved in the conference was Clovis dentist Jacob Moberly, president of the UMKC Dental Alumni Association.
