Williams, Purdy earn second-place finishes

AMARILLO — Phillip Williams and Charles Purdy earned second-place finishes for the Clovis High boys in the Amarillo Relays track meet Friday and Saturday at Dick Bivins Stadium.

Williams went 22 feet in long jump while Purdy threw 53-4. Other placers for the Wildcats were Matt Appelman, 10:09 for third in the 3,200, and Brian Mead, 16 seconds for sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Coach Darren Kelley said a hamstring injury to sprinter John Trachida and ACT tests involving several athletes hurt the Cats in relays and distance events.

Girls meet postponed — At Las Vegas, N.M., rain and the threat of more inclement weather led to the postponement of Saturday’s West Las Vegas Invitatinal track meet, which involved Clovis High School.

Lady Wildcats coach Darrel Ray said Saturday night that the meet has been rescheduled for 3 p.m. on Monday.

Tennis rained out — At Albuquerque, Clovis High School’s boys and girls District 4-5A tennis opener on Saturday at Eldorado was postponed due to rain.

CHS coach Billie Merritt said Saturday night that the dual has been tentatively rescheduled for April 13.
