Texico pounds out 19 hits in district opener

SANTA ROSA — Texico staked Braden Vaughan to a five-run lead and the junior right-hander made it stand as the Wolverines opened District 7-1/2A play Tuesday with a 15-4 win over Santa Rosa.

Third baseman Zach Rhoades went 4-for-5 and first baseman Bryce Bailey doubled and homered as Texico pounded out 19 hits in support of Vaughan’s solid effort.

Vaughan (2-1) allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked five.

Bailey’s second home run of the season, a two-run shot, gave Texico a 10-4 lead in the sixth and Rhoades delivered his second two-run single of the game in a five-run seventh.

Santa Rosa (1-7, 0-1 district) scored three times in the fourth to pull within 5-4.
