Spring Fling to feature music, comedy

Spring break ended Monday for Eastern New Mexico University students, but the office of Student Activities and Organizations is giving students a week-long chance to soak up a little more in the form of activities.

The annual Spring Fling starts today and runs through Saturday with a variety of events, ranging from music to marathons to mechanical bulls.

“I would say Spring Fling is a time for students to get out and have fun with the weather” said Shannon Osborne, a program advisor with the office. “You’ve just got off of midterms (and spring break). People can get kind of antsy, so this is a good chance to relax.”

With the exception of Saturday’s 5K fun run/walk, all of the events will take place at the Campus Union Building.

Today will feature a mechanical bull ride from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and comedian Eric Nieves will have an 8 p.m. performance.

Wednesday’s events will start at 7 p.m. and will feature Music Madness and the Green Man Awards, a mock awards show in its second year.

Most of the activities at Spring Fling are similar events that go on throughout the year, but are planned into a much smaller timeframe. Will Katayin, the office’s director, said planning for the event on a year-round basis helps make things a little less hectic than they could be.

Most of the participants, including Music Madness headliner band Sweet James, agreed last summer to participate in Spring Fling.

Katayin said that Sweet James is a group from California that has a “Matchbox 20 feel.” The rock band, which opened for Christian artist Switchfoot in a February show, will play to open the Music Madness and then act as judges for the bands in the competition.

I’m really excited with the headline band we have coming in,” Katayin said. “The competition for Music Madness is better than it’s ever been and that’s what really makes the event.”

Spring Fling ends Saturday at Greyhound Arena with the walk/run. Osborne said most of the events were indoors and the race would give people a chance to still enjoy the early April weather.
