Freedom takes first in journalism contest
AMARILLO — The (Texas) Panhandle Press Association on Saturday awarded the Clovis News Journal its General Excellence award for the third consecutive year.
The General Excellence honor is the press association’s top prize, awarded in two circulation categories. The CNJ competed in the largest circulation category. The Clovis paper also won the award for work published in 2001 and 2002.
The CNJ captured first-place awards in front-page layout (Gwyn Del Toro), sports photography (Eric Kluth) and Web site competitions.
Six different CNJ staffers won individual awards, all for work published in 2003. A special section focused on welcoming home Cannon Air Force Base personnel from deployments received a second-place honor.
The Portales News-Tribune, a sister paper, also fared well in the newspaper competition, earning five awards. PNT photographer Lisa Sonnenschein captured a first-place award for feature photography
