AMARILLO — The Clovis High boys golf team got solid production as usual from its top three, but the Wildcats needed a solid No. 4 score from junior Ryan Hahn on Saturday to repeat as champions in the Amarillo Relays.
Junior Travis Reid took individual medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 1-over 143 and junior Guillermo Chavez and senior Perry Jackson also finished in the top six. Hahn, though, shot a 90 at Amarillo Country Club after his opening-round 90 at Tascosa Country Club, and that was just enough to give the Cats a two-shot victory (622-624) over Lubbock Coronado in the 18-team event.
“The person that really won the tournament for us was Ryan Hahn,” CHS boys coach George Simmons said. “Everybody kept their composure and a real positive attitude, and I think that helped us pull through.
“I was real happy for the guys to come through and repeat.”
Clovis shot 318 on Friday and trailed Coronado by four shots. But, playing with the Mustangs on Saturday, the Cats shot a four-man score of 304 to pick up six shots.
“The (Amarillo Country Club) course was in excellent shape,” Simmons said. “The greens were pretty soft and they were able to throw shots at the pin. To shoot the scores we did, with the (windy) conditions, was pretty good.”
Reid shot even-par 70 on Saturday after finishing 1-over at Tascosa. Chavez finished third at 75-76 — 151 while Jackson tied with Palo Duro’s Mike Smith for sixth place, both shooting 80-75 — 155.
The girls’ tournament was split into two brackets, and Clovis won in Division II with a score of 828, 13 shots ahead of Guymon, Okla. Both rounds for the girls were played at Ross Rogers East Country Club.
Senior Susan Shelley led the Lady Cats, taking third place individually at 97-94 — 191 and earning her second qualifying leg for the Class 5A state tournament.
Amanda Estes and Carlee Snyder were ninth and 10th for the Lady Cats with respective rounds of 214 and 216.

Cats third at Hobbs
HOBBS — Senior Charles Purdy set a Clovis High shot put record Saturday as the Wildcats finished third with 64 points in the season-opening Gene Wells Invitational track meet.
Midland Lee rolled to victory with 139 points, while Midland High was second with 77 in the 11-team get-together.
Purdy qualified for state on his first throw in preliminaries, and threw 57 feet, 2 1/2 inches on his final throw of the competition to break the school record of 56-7, set in 1991 by Jackson Steller.
“It’s awesome for him,” Clovis coach Darren Kelley said. “His goal was to qualify for state and he did that on his throw. I told him the next goal to go after was the school record.
“I guess the next thing is the state title.”
The Cats also picked up second-place finishes from junior Phillip Williams in the long jump (23-4) and senior Jarod Baldwin in the javelin (155-4).
Williams added a third in the 100 meters and Tim Perkins was third in the triple jump.
The 800-meter relay team of Williams, Ben Teconchuk, Tanner Fickling and John Tranchida also placed third.
District 4-5A rival Carlsbad was a distant fourth with 43 points.
“We’re going to be all right,” Kelley said. “We can beat all the teams we need to beat.”
