Bill Crook, 73, of Chandler, Ariz., died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004.

He was born Jan. 5, 1931, in Clovis, to Buck and Sallie Mae Crook in Clovis.

Family members said in his youth he was a rodeo cowboy and won prizes in calf roping.

They said he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and after the war was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. Instead of playing football, they said, he married his lifelong sweetheart, Wynell.

He held many engineering jobs, including in the defense industry and space program, and retired in 1993 from Motorola.

He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Bruce.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lynn Whitman (and husband Dave); his mother; grandchildren, Jeremy Whitman and Sarah Whitman; a daughter-in-law, Jen Crook; a brother, Don Crook (Venita) and many other family members and friends.

Services were held March 13 at the First Christian Church in Scottsdale, Ariz.
