Aid center halts discrimination

Fair housing laws in New Mexico are being enforced by the Fair Housing Center of New Mexico Legal Aid, according to a news release from Nita Luna-Davis, Fair Housing Center director.

The organization “recently achieved an important victory for a father and son, and a biracial couple, experiencing race and family status discrimination,” she said.

After investigating allegations and gathering evidence, the organization turned its findings over to the U.S. Department of Justice, and a federal lawsuit was filed against owners and managers of 12 apartment complexes in Albuquerque, she said. A settlement was reached for $120,000.

“Race and family status are just two of the groups protected by the Fair Housing Act and New Mexico law.

Other protected status include national origin, gender, color, religion, mental or physical disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity and spousal affiliation,” she said. Additional details may be found online at:
