Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
The details of a proposed city of Clovis civic center are taking shape during work sessions between members of the city’s civic center committee and architects from the Albuquerque firm Dekker/Perich/Sabatini.
Committee members and architects met for a second planning session Thursday in the North Annex of the Clovis-Carver Public Library.
In a four-hour brainstorming session, the volunteers and the architects discussed what types of events are most likely to be held in the building and how much space would be required to stage them efficiently.
Committee members said priorities for the civic center would be small meeting rooms, space for banquets, private parties and receptions, trade shows and region-sized meetings of various organizations.
Architect Steven Perich said a building designed to stage these types of events might contain one main room of between 16,000 and 20,000 square feet, with a dividing wall so it could be separated into smaller areas, plus a group of smaller rooms, between 600 and 700 square feet, that could hold between 25 and 50 people for smaller meetings.
The main room also might be equipped with screens and projectors that could be lowered from the ceiling for presentations, as well as acoustics and wiring adequate for concerts, committee members said.
The committee’s next meeting, scheduled for late March or early April, will be devoted to developing a schematic layout of the civic center.
Perich said the architects will submit conceptual drawings of the civic center at a public meeting of the city commission later this year.
The city of Clovis has budgeted $5 million for the civic center, which will be built on a 27-acre site at the corner of Schepps Boulevard and Seventh Street, city officials said.
