Convention to address Bible's relevancy

The New Mexico Christian Convention is coming to Clovis next week and the general public is invited to attend the preaching and teaching sessions that will be held Thursday through Saturday.

Hosted by Central Christian Church and First Christian Church, the meeting is the statewide assembly of independent Christian churches in New Mexico. According to Jon Forrest, senior pastor of First Christian Church, the convention’s theme is “Ancient Words Ever True” and focuses on developing the understanding that the words of Jesus Christ and the Bible are as relevant today as they were when they were first spoken or written.

The featured speaker is Paul Williams, president and executive director of “The Orchard Group,” a church planting organization.

“People will think that they are right there with Jesus as they are brought directly into the life and times of Jesus Christ,” Forrest said.

Other convention highlights include a study of the biblical book of Romans by Mark D. Berrier Sr., professor of Bible and theology at Dallas Christian College, and worship services led by a fellow professor at Dallas Christian College, Scott Spies, who is a music professor and former missionary. Workshops held during the convention include sessions on prayer ministry, developing a leadership team in the church and worship ministry.

The adult sessions will be held at First Christian Church, 1700 North Main, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Concurrent with the adult events, an “Extreme Teen Convention” will be held at Central Christian Church, 300 West 14th Street, with David Drake, youth pastor of Raintree Christian Church in Lubbock, as its speaker. Forrest described Drake’s speaking style as “off the wall, if not outrageous,” and said he is often a favorite with youth. As part of the teen program, the local Christian band “Out of Darkness” will perform at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Children’s sessions will also be held at Central Christian Church.

Registration fees at $3 for singles and $10 per family. For times and further information, contact Central Christian Church at 763-3517 or First Christian Church at 763-7113.
