ENMU officials plan campus improvements

Fixing a leaky roof and conducting constructional upgrades to another building at Eastern New Mexico University were the topics of discussion at the ENMU Board of Regents meeting on Monday.

Recent rainstorms are the reason for one building experiencing leaks.

The Board of Regents made two approvals on bids. The Board of Regents approved the contract for architectural services for constructional upgrades for the Health Sciences Center to Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, Inc. out of Lubbock and ASA Architects, P.A., with offices in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Roswell and El Paso, Texas.

They will be responsible for the renovation and expansion of an existing Walker Air Force Base building to the Health Sciences Center.

“They (Parkhill, Smith and Cooper Inc.) designed the Midland Community College,” ENMU President Dr. Steven Gamble said. “Based upon conversation with (MCC) faculty, it has served them well. We recommend ASA, an in-house local firm.”

Regent Jay Gurley asked why there was no price in the bid.

“This is a qualification proposal, not a price-qualification proposal,” Roberta Bruce, ENMU purchasing agent, said. “It is an estimated 40,000 square feet total, includes renovations and the addition of 22,000 square feet.”

ENMU officials said there were 17 proposals entered during the bid process.

Roughly $3 million to fund the project will come from a statewide general obligation bond election.

The Board of Regents also approved the a contract from Allen Roofing in a re-roofing project to repair leaks and damaged roofs on the Vocational Technology Building. The bid from the local contractor was for $185,898.13.
