Vernon Riley Mills, 88, of Albuquerque died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Woodmark Uptown Assisted Living Center in Albuquerque.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1915, in Ranchvale, to William and Rosa Lane Mills.

He began his career in administration as a teaching principal in Claude in 1937. He married Lorene Hartley on Nov. 30, 1939. He was an elementary principal in Portales, then elementary principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent for Artesia Public Schools. He returned to Clovis as superintendent of Clovis Municipal Schools for eight years, retiring in 1973.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Charles and Bill Mills; and two sisters, Edith Norris and Lucille Lancaster.

Survivors include two sons, Sidney Lane Mills (and wife, Sylvia) of Albuquerque and Rodney W. Mills (Susan) of Lubbock; two daughters, Jackie Hodges (Don) and Pam Baum (Jeff), all of Clovis; two sisters, Maybelle Schults of Portales and Vivian Webb of Clovis; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Muffley’s Funeral Home in Clovis.

Steve McElroy will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Hollene Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gary, Bobby and Ken Lancaster, Laddie and Ronald Mills and Gerald and Jimmy Webb.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church building fund 1501 Sycamore, Clovis, NM 88101, or to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032.
