Allsup family honored for largess

While many individuals made donations of hundreds of dollars to United Way and some people and businesses made donations in the thousands, one family made a far larger contribution and received a special award at Thursday night’s United Way annual award banquet.

Lonnie and Barbara Allsup, owners of the Allsup’s chain of convenience stores, received a special Alexis de Tocqueville Society award for their donation of more than $10,000.

“We feel we need to give back to our community,” said Lonnie Allsup. “The community has been good to us, and we derive a lot of our good employees from our community.”

Allsup said about 150 of his 2,300 employees live in Clovis, where the company is headquartered.

“We feel we want to put back some of what we are fortunate to have received,” Allsup said.
