Helen E. Mapes Miller, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at her home in Roswell.

She was born May 13, 1912, in Iowa City, Iowa, to C.M. Fountain and Mabel G. (Miller) Fountain.

She moved to Roswell in 1937 from Iowa, and then to Artesia in 1940.

On May 25, 1940, she was married to Melvin A. Mapes Jr. in Roswell. He preceded her in death in 1978. On April 4, 2000, she was married to Frank Miller in Roswell.

She was a school teacher for 28 years and a member of First United Methodist Church in Roswell. Service and honors included: president of the United Methodist Women for two terms; Eastern New Mexico Hall of Fame-Education; president, Retired Teachers Association for two terms; Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year; Phi Mu Sorority; Kappa Phi; Delta Kappa Gamma; president, Story League; Methodist Choir for 50 years; Community Concert Singing Group; Artist of the Year (Artesia); Artist of the Month (Carlsbad Art Association); directed and designed Heritage Mall (Artesia); and Hermosa P.T.A.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.

Survivors include her husband Frank Miller of the home; son, Mel Mapes (and wife Kathy) of Clovis; grandsons, Michael Mapes of Clovis, Mark Mapes of Lovington and Matthew Mapes of Lubbock; and step-granddaughters, Katy Montoya of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Paty Gambordella of New Orleans, La.

The Rev. Archie Echols officiated at the services Friday in Roswell.

Arrangements were under the direction of Terpening and Son Mortuary of Artesia.
